The Chickering Piano Co was established in 1823 in Boston, Massachusetts. They are one of the oldest piano names that is still widely recognized. Although currently the Chickering name may not be used on any new production. Baldwin is the current owner of the name.

Jonas Chickering renamed the company to Chickering and Sons in 1852 after bringing his sons into the company. Jonas introduced the one piece cast iron plate design, which added great strength for supporting the string tension of large grand pianos. In the mid 1800's they were the biggest piano maker in America.

In the 1860's Steinway became the largest manufacturer. Back then Chickering was certainly a good piano, but Steinway definitely at some point surpassed them in concert quality. In 1908 they were sold to American Piano Co. And the Aeolian Co bought them in 1932.

The plant then was in East Rochester, NY. That factory closed in 1982. All of the consoles were made in Rochester until 1983 when console production was moved to Memphis TN. The Memphis plant closed in 1985. For many years Chickering consoles competed well in the upper quality range of the piano business.

Starting in 1986 Wurlitzer used the name on some of their pianos until Baldwin bought them in 1995.
