Steinway Facts
Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg Sr. started Steinway & Sons in 1853 in New York. He and his family came to the US in 1850. He changed his name to Henry Steinway to make it sound more American. He apparantly felt this was neccessary to succeed in business in America.

The Steinway piano company grew very quickly and by 1859 built the largest piano factory in the world. By the 1860's they were making about 2000 pianos a year. Averaging 40 instruments a week in the mid 1800's was a tremendous feat.

In 1880 they built a plant in Hamburg, Germany. The first square grand was made in 1853. Steinway built the first full cast iron overstrung grand piano plate in 1877. This was a magnificent technical achievemrnt.

In 1911 the factory was moved to Long Island, NY. Steinway was bought by CBS, Inc. in 1972. A group of Boston businessmen bought the company in 1985 and merged with the Selmer Co. in 1995.

Steinway & Sons continue to build some of the world's finest pianos, and probably still have the highest annual production numbers of any concert level piano maker in the world. They build an average of 4000 instuments per year, with some years as high as 5000 or more.
