The Young Chang Piano company was established in 1956 in Seoul Korea. At first they only assembled pianos from parts made by Yamaha. The company was incorporated in 1962 and started making their own instruments in 1968 with technical help from Yamaha.

A new factory was built in Incheon, Korea and Young Chang started exporting pianos in 1971. A second plant was built in 1976 and in 1979 Young Chang America was started. After this more imports were coming into the US, although some may have come in between 1971 and 1979.

Young Chang built one of the largest piano factories in history in 1996 in Tianjin, China. This created a flow of imports that were built cheaper than those built in Korea. At that time Chang projected that they would build 200,000 pianos a year in this Chinese factory.

I know that in the 80's and 90's in the Memphis, Tn area Young Chang was one of the largest selling instruments. Partly because the local dealer representing YC was a very aggressive promoter of this instrument. Many YC's for at least a 20 year period were sold to churches, schools and individuals.

Also in the late 1980's and early 1990's Young Chang made guitars for Fender, but had to stop because of a licensing issue. They also had started making the Pramberger Series pianos at the Incheon plant in 2001. But Joseph Pramberger died in 2003 and his estate sold the Pramberger name to Samick.

This resulted in Chang not being able to use the Pramberger name and Samick not being able to use the design. A legal issue also resulted in causing YC parts to not be available for a period of time. This caused a real problem for tuners in Memphis and other cities.

Most of the G models were all built in Korea. In my opinion these were the best Young Changs. The Prambergers were also considered to be even finer pianos. Now most of these instruments are built in China.
