Franz Rudolph Wurlitzer started the Wurlitzer Co. in 1856 in New York. A few years later he built a factory in Cincinnati, Ohio. The first piano was built in 1880. By the 1900's verticals were being built in New York and grands were built in De Kalb, Ill. For a while offices were in Chicago.

Wurlitzer owned many other names but all pianos were built under the Wurlitzer name. They later bought Chickering. In 1990 factories were in Holly Springs and Corinth, Miss. Wurlitzer closed in the early 1990's, then in 1995 Baldwin acquired Wurlitzer and Chickering. The Gibson Guitar Co. acquired the name when they bought Baldwin.

The Wurlitzer Piano Company is one of the oldest and most well known companies in the world of music. Their organs and juke boxes were also very well liked. And don't forget about the Wurlitzer electric piano. It made history and was one of the earliest electronic keyboards.

As for the Wurlitzer spinet piano, it is only rivaled by Baldwin in the numbers of instruments built in the history of piano making. Kimball may be the only other American co. that matched their numbers in production. Wurlitzer truely was a mighty company.
