Kawai Facts and Review
The Kawai Piano Company was started in 1927 in Hamamatsu, Japan by Koichi Kawai. Shigeru Kawai took charge in 1955 and Hirotaka Kawai was in control by 1989. They started making pianos in the US in 1988. Although American production may have ceased after 2004.

Production in Indonesia began around 2003. The Shigeru Piano is a more expensive hand crafted line started in 2000 in Japan. Although according to annual production numbers the Shigeru Kawai sells an impressive amount of instruments.

Overall the Kawai is a very good piano. They have competed well in the United States and the entire world. Sales volume for new pianos as a whole is not as large as it used to be, but because of inflation (rising prices), Kawais cost much more than they used to.

Kawai also competes well with their electronic keyboards and synthesizers. They are probably in the top 5 keyboards of the world. Without a doubt the Kawai Piano is a great instrument to own and perform on.

As for tuning a Kawai I can say that they hold up quite well. Although sometimes the tuning pins can be to tight. This is mostly the grands. But, too tight is better than too loose.
